Head football coach resigns
The vacant position on the Greene County Schools board of education will be filled by special election, with a tentative date of March 14.
School superintendent Tim Christensen recommended to the board at its Jan. 18 meeting that the vacancy created by the resignation of Ashley Johnston be filled by special election. He noted that two persons had expressed interest in the position – Steve Fisher and Matt Wetrich.
According to deputy auditor for elections Billie Jo Hoskins, 50 signatures will be needed on a nominating petition. Those petitions will be available at the school board secretary’s office at the administrative building, but not until after the secretary has filed the request for a special election with the auditor. The deadline for filing a nominating petition is Feb. 17 at 5 pm.
The person elected in March will serve until the regular school election next September. At that time, voters will elect a person to serve until that seat expires in 2019.
The cost of the special election will be between $2,250 and $5,750. Christensen explained the higher cost is what the district paid for the bond referendum last September for extended polling hours and renting Clover Hall. The lower cost is typical of a regular school election.
Another agenda item of particular interest at the Jan. 18 meeting was reduction of one principal position. Christensen in December said he would have a recommendation of which principal would be terminated at the January meeting. He reported that he needs two more weeks to complete all steps and to talk with that person.
Also, under the consent agenda the board accepted the resignation of Dean Lansman as head football coach.
